Dundurn Castle Engagement Photoshoot in Hamilton

Some engagement sessions begin with a location. Others begin with a feeling.

When Sumbul and Brian first started planning their engagement photoshoot, they were not completely sure where they wanted to go. Instead of choosing a place simply because it was popular, we talked about the style they imagined for their photos — something elegant but relaxed, romantic without feeling overly formal, and surrounded by beautiful architecture and nature.

Once I understood what they had in mind, Dundurn Castle in Hamilton immediately came to mind.

And it could not have suited them better.

The pale historic architecture, enormous green lawns, mature trees and soft summer light gave us so many possibilities without ever making the session feel like we were moving from one predetermined “photo spot” to another. We simply explored the grounds together, followed the light and allowed the evening to unfold.

But what I will remember most about this session is Sumbul and Brian themselves.

They are incredibly kind, sweet and wonderful people to spend time with, and photographing them felt wonderfully easy. I am already so excited to see them again and photograph their wedding this September.

Finding the Right Location for Sumbul & Brian’s Engagement Photos

I always believe the location should complement the couple rather than overpower them.

Dundurn Castle has a very recognizable look, but there is enough variety around the grounds that an engagement photoshoot at Dundurn Castle does not have to feel formal or repetitive.

For Sumbul and Brian, we used the architecture almost as a quiet framework around their story.

Their light, neutral outfits looked beautiful against the soft tones of the historic buildings, while the green lawns and trees added a completely different feeling to the photographs. As we moved around the property, the gallery naturally shifted between architectural portraits, close intimate moments, wide environmental photographs, playful movement and small details.

That variety is one of my favourite things about photographing here.

You can create an image where the couple feels tiny against the scale of Dundurn Castle, then walk a few minutes and make a photograph that feels completely intimate — just two people, soft light and nothing else competing for attention.

Chasing the Summer Light Around Dundurn Castle

We chose to photograph Sumbul and Brian close to sunset, and I am very happy we did.

The evening sun moved through the trees and across the grounds, changing the character of the location as we walked. Instead of staying in one place, we kept looking for the next pocket of beautiful light.

At times we used the grand architecture of the main building. At others, we stepped beneath the trees, photographed against the smaller historic structures or let the open lawns become the backdrop.

And when the sun dropped lower, everything became softer.

Those are often my favourite moments during an engagement session. The location is still beautiful, of course, but you start noticing the smaller things more: a hand resting on a shoulder, the way someone looks at the person they love, a laugh between photographs, a dress moving while they walk.

The photographs stop being about Dundurn Castle.

They become about Sumbul and Brian.

An Engagement Photoshoot That Felt Like a Date

One of the nicest things about working with these two was how naturally they interacted with each other.

We walked.

We talked.

We laughed.

Sometimes I gave them a little direction, and sometimes I simply watched what happened.

There were quiet portraits and playful ones, photographs of them holding each other beneath the trees, walking hand in hand across the lawn, sitting together on the steps and running toward the next location as the evening light changed.

That balance is always what I want from an engagement gallery.

I want beautiful portraits, but I also want photographs that remind you what being together actually felt like at this particular moment in your lives.

Years from now, I hope Sumbul and Brian do not only remember what they wore or where we stood. I hope these photographs bring back the anticipation of the summer before their wedding, the way they laughed together and what it felt like knowing that their wedding day was only weeks away.

Planning a Dundurn Castle Engagement Photoshoot?

For couples searching for Dundurn Castle engagement photography, here are the things I would consider before planning a session here.

Dundurn is one of those rare locations where architecture, greenery and beautiful natural light all exist within a relatively compact area. That versatility is exactly why I recommended it to Sumbul and Brian.

Why Is Dundurn Castle Good for Engagement Photos?

Dundurn Castle works especially well for an engagement photoshoot because you do not have to choose between an architectural setting and a natural one.

The property gives you both.

There are grand historic façades, columns, symmetrical architecture and smaller buildings for a more editorial feeling. At the same time, there are lawns, mature trees, pathways and views toward the water that can make the photographs feel much softer and more relaxed.

This means one Dundurn Castle photoshoot can produce several very different visual moods without driving between locations or losing valuable shooting time.

Do You Need a Photography Permit at Dundurn Castle?

For a small engagement session, the current City of Hamilton rules are particularly convenient.

As of August 2026, the City of Hamilton states that a photography permit is required for outdoor photography at Dundurn involving 10 or more people. A typical engagement session consisting of the couple and photographer falls below that threshold. Because policies and fees can change, I still recommend checking the City’s current information before planning your session.

For couples, this is one of Dundurn’s practical advantages compared with some popular Ontario engagement photography locations that require advance reservations or photography permits even for very small sessions.

What Is the Best Time for Dundurn Castle Engagement Photos?

My first choice on a sunny day is usually the later afternoon and sunset hours.

That is exactly what we chose for Sumbul and Brian.

Dundurn has large open lawns and light-coloured architecture, so strong midday sunshine can create much more contrast than I normally want. Later in the day, the sun becomes easier to work with, the trees create beautiful areas of directional light, and eventually the entire property begins to soften.

It also allows us to create two distinct looks within the same session: brighter, cleaner photographs earlier in the evening and warmer, more romantic golden-hour engagement photos as sunset approaches.

Is Dundurn Castle Good for Photos on a Cloudy Day?

Absolutely.

I love sunny weather, but Dundurn Castle is one of the locations where I would not be disappointed to see clouds in the forecast.

Cloud cover creates a different kind of photography rather than worse photography.

Soft light makes it possible to use angles that can be difficult during strong sunshine and often gives us even more freedom around the architectural portions of the property.

So if your forecast suddenly changes from sunshine to overcast, I would not rush to reschedule a Dundurn Castle engagement session simply because of clouds.

The location can look beautiful in both conditions.

Is Dundurn Castle Crowded on Weekends?

It can be.

Dundurn Park is a public space, and weekends — particularly beautiful summer evenings — naturally bring more visitors, events and activities.

During Sumbul and Brian’s engagement session, there was even a summer theatre rehearsal happening on the grounds.

That does not mean your photographs need to look crowded.

I constantly adjust angles and timing to keep distracting people outside the frame whenever possible. And if an otherwise beautiful photograph has unavoidable people or small distractions in the background, those elements can be cleaned up during post-production, including with generative editing tools when appropriate.

Your final gallery should feel like your engagement session, not like a record of everyone else who happened to visit the park that afternoon.

What Should You Wear for Dundurn Castle Engagement Photos?

This is one of the easiest locations in Hamilton when it comes to wardrobe.

A formal dress can work beautifully here. So can something clean and contemporary, romantic summer clothing or a more casual look.

The important thing is not that both people dress identically. It is that the outfits feel visually connected.

For Sumbul and Brian, the light neutral palette worked beautifully with Dundurn’s architecture and summer greenery. It kept the photographs clean and allowed their expressions and connection to remain the focus.

When I help couples plan their engagement session, I am always happy to discuss outfits beforehand. Small decisions involving colour, fabric, footwear and how two looks work together can make a significant difference once everything is seen in the full gallery.

Should We Bring More Than One Outfit?

You certainly can, but you do not need multiple outfits to create variety at Dundurn Castle.

The location itself provides so many different backgrounds that a single cohesive look can easily carry an entire photoshoot.

If you do want two looks, I would normally make them intentionally different — for example, one elevated and romantic outfit and one more relaxed look — rather than changing into something very similar.

What If We Are Awkward in Front of the Camera?

This may be the most common concern I hear before an engagement photoshoot.

You do not need to know how to pose.

That is my job.

You also do not need to spend an hour thinking about where your hands should go or whether you are smiling correctly.

I will give you direction when you need it and adjust things that matter photographically, but I do not want you concentrating on the mechanics of being photographed.

The best thing you can do is much simpler:

Treat your engagement photoshoot like another date.

Walk together. Talk. Tease each other. Hold hands. Look at the person you are actually marrying rather than constantly looking toward the camera.

And laugh when something goes wrong.

Some of the photographs you end up loving most often happen immediately after the photograph you thought we were trying to create.

How Do You Get Natural Engagement Photos at Dundurn Castle?

Movement helps enormously.

Instead of building an entire session around static poses, I like to move through the property. We can walk across the lawn, sit for a few minutes, explore another building, stop when the light becomes beautiful, then continue.

It gives you something to do together and prevents the photoshoot from feeling like a long portrait appointment.

That is exactly how Sumbul and Brian’s session evolved, and it is one of the reasons the final Dundurn Castle engagement photos feel connected even though we photographed in many different areas of the property.

What Is My Biggest Advice for Your Engagement Photoshoot?

Do not arrive believing that you have to create great photographs for me.

You don’t.

Come ready to spend an evening together.

You already know how to make each other laugh. You already know how to hold each other. You already know all the tiny things about the other person that made you decide to get married.

Bring that.

Chat, laugh, move, be in love — and leave the photography to me.
