Some engagement sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like simply spending an afternoon together. Mike and Becky’s session was exactly that.
We met at Abrielle in downtown Toronto, inside The Sutton Place Hotel, for a relaxed summer engagement session that felt warm, elegant and completely natural from the very beginning. Afterwards, we stepped outside for a walk through the city, continuing the photographs around St. Andrew’s and the surrounding downtown streets.
I was already excited to photograph Mike and Becky’s wedding later this year. After spending this afternoon with them, I am looking forward to it even more.
They are thoughtful, kind and genuinely wonderful to be around, and there is such an easy tenderness between them. Photographing that kind of connection is one of the reasons I love engagement photography so much.

Mike and Becky chose Abrielle for the first part of their engagement session, and it turned out to be such a beautiful setting for photographs.
Abrielle has a very distinctive atmosphere. The soft colours, warm wood, patterned floors, sculptural lighting and beautiful bar give the restaurant character without overwhelming the people in the photographs. Large windows bring in plenty of natural light during the afternoon, creating exactly the kind of soft, luminous look that I love.
The restaurant offers photography permits during the quieter part of the day, and having the space almost entirely to ourselves made the session feel incredibly relaxed.
There was no need to rush from one photograph to another. Mike and Becky could simply sit together at the bar, talk, laugh, share a drink and enjoy being together while I photographed what naturally happened between them.
Those moments became some of my favourite photographs from the session.

I never want an engagement session to feel like ninety minutes of posing.
Of course, I will always help with light, composition and gentle direction when it is needed. But once everything is in place, the most important part is giving a couple enough space to forget about the camera.
With Mike and Becky, that happened very quickly.
They talked across the bar, leaned into one another, laughed between photographs and shared the little expressions that are impossible to manufacture. There are photographs of them looking directly at the camera, but many of the frames I love most are the ones where they are completely focused on each other.
That is the balance I am always looking for as an engagement photographer in Toronto: photographs that are polished enough to feel timeless, while still preserving the personality and actual relationship of the couple in front of the camera.

Mike and Becky also chose clothing that worked beautifully with the space.
Becky wore a soft blush floral dress while Mike kept his look light and understated in white and warm neutral tones. Against Abrielle’s pastel interior, marble surfaces and warm bar lighting, everything came together naturally.
Nothing competed for attention.
Instead, the colours allowed their expressions, gestures and connection to remain the focus of the photographs.
We used several different areas of the restaurant so the gallery would feel varied without losing its visual continuity: the bar, window tables, the artwork-filled seating area and some of the smaller architectural details throughout the space.
There are wider photographs that show the design of Abrielle and more intimate portraits where almost everything disappears except Mike and Becky.
That mix is important to me. A complete engagement gallery should tell you not only what a couple looked like, but also what being there felt like.

After finishing inside, we stepped out into the bright Toronto afternoon.
The mood changed immediately.
Inside Abrielle, the photographs were intimate and quiet. Outside, the city became part of the story.
We walked without trying to turn the afternoon into a long list of locations. Instead, we used what we found along the way: modern buildings, open sidewalks, patches of sunlight, older stone architecture and the greenery surrounding St. Andrew’s.
The CN Tower appeared between the downtown buildings in several photographs, giving the gallery an unmistakably Toronto sense of place without making every image feel like a traditional city landmark photograph.
This is one of my favourite ways to photograph an engagement session in Toronto. The city can be present without taking over the story.
Mike and Becky were still the centre of every frame.

The final part of the session took us around St. Andrew’s, where the atmosphere became softer again.
After the bright streets and glass towers, the stone architecture and mature trees gave us something completely different within only a short walk.
We photographed Mike and Becky sitting together on the steps, walking along the street and standing beneath the trees as the afternoon light moved through the leaves.
The photographs from this part of the session are some of the gentlest in the gallery. They feel like the natural ending to the afternoon — less about a location and more about the two of them simply having a little time together.
Toronto gives an engagement photographer an enormous amount of variety in a surprisingly small area. Within one session, we were able to move from an elegant restaurant interior to modern downtown architecture, iconic Toronto views, historic stonework and summer greenery without ever making the experience feel like a race between photo locations.

What I will remember most from this session is not a particular photograph or location.
It is how comfortable Mike and Becky are together.
There is a calmness between them that comes through in the photographs — in the way they look at each other, in the moments between poses and in the way they naturally fall back into conversation as soon as the camera is no longer asking anything from them.
Those small moments are often the ones that matter most to me.
An engagement session is wonderful practice for being photographed before a wedding, but it is also something much more valuable than that. It becomes a record of this very specific chapter in a couple’s life: after deciding to marry one another, while the wedding is still ahead of them and before everything begins moving very quickly.
Mike and Becky, thank you for trusting me with these photographs.
It was such a pleasure spending this afternoon with you, and it makes me even more excited to photograph your wedding and continue the story.
I cannot wait to see you again.

If you found this story while searching for an engagement photographer in Toronto or Ontario, welcome.
We are Alexandra and Vladimir of Nadtochiy Photography, a husband-and-wife photography and videography team. We have been photographing weddings and couples since 2008, with an approach that blends documentary photography, natural moments and a subtle editorial influence inspired by film.
Our goal is not to turn a wedding or engagement session into one long photoshoot. We want the photographs to belong to the experience rather than interrupt it.
That means giving direction when it is helpful, paying close attention to light and composition, and then leaving enough room for real conversations, movement, laughter and everything that happens in between.
We photograph engagement sessions and weddings throughout Toronto, the GTA and Ontario, and we also travel for celebrations across Canada and internationally.
An engagement session can take place somewhere elegant and intimate like Abrielle, outdoors in one of Toronto’s quieter neighbourhoods, along the waterfront, in the heart of downtown, or somewhere personally meaningful to you.
The best location is not necessarily the most famous one. It is the place that gives us the right atmosphere for the two of you.
