Vlada and Alex, I have been looking forward to sharing these photographs with you for such a long time.
I first met you at the wedding of your friends Oksana and Stephen at The Pearle Hotel in Burlington, and I am so happy that meeting eventually led us here. What started as an idea for a winter photoshoot in the snow slowly turned into something completely different: an elegant, cinematic engagement session through downtown Toronto, followed by the soft summer light of Exhibition Place and the waterfront.
In the end, I cannot imagine this photoshoot any other way.

Some stories seem extraordinary because of where they begin, while others become extraordinary because of how long they continue.
Vlada and Alex both came to Canada as teenagers, arriving from different countries and beginning entirely new chapters of their lives here. They met in high school, fell in love, and have been together ever since.
Years later, standing together in the middle of downtown Toronto, there was something especially meaningful about photographing them in the city that became part of their shared story.
Their connection was also incredibly easy to photograph. There was no need to manufacture emotion or turn every moment into a pose. The way they looked at each other, laughed together, held hands while walking through the city, or simply stood close when everything around them was moving already said everything.
Several weeks after this session, Vlada and Alex travelled to Greece for their beautiful destination wedding, making these photographs an especially wonderful little chapter between everything that came before and everything that was about to begin.

We had actually been planning this photoshoot for a long time.
The original idea was completely different: snow, winter clothes and a classic Canadian winter atmosphere. The only problem was that Toronto winter weather had plans of its own. Between unpredictable snow and Vlada and Alex’s busy work schedules, finding the right day became increasingly difficult.
Instead of forcing the original concept, we allowed the idea to evolve.
We talked through the wardrobe, mood, locations and overall visual direction in advance, eventually creating a route that would take us from historic Toronto architecture into the Financial District, through Exhibition Place and the CNE grounds, and finally to the waterfront.
Vlada’s long black off-the-shoulder dress and Alex’s all-black look gave the entire engagement photoshoot a beautifully understated elegance. Against red brick, pale stone, glass skyscrapers, green trees and the blue tones of the Toronto waterfront, the monochrome wardrobe kept the photographs cohesive even as the surroundings changed completely.
It felt polished without becoming formal, editorial without losing the warmth between them.

We began at Toronto Club, one of the most distinctive historic red-brick buildings in downtown Toronto.
Its warm brick façade, carved stone details, grand doorway and steps immediately created the kind of contrast we wanted for the beginning of the gallery. Against the architecture, Vlada and Alex’s black outfits looked almost timeless.
We photographed them separately first, creating a few quieter portraits before bringing them together for the more intimate photographs on the steps and beside the building. Some of my favourite images from this part of the session are also the simplest: a hand resting on a shoulder, the two of them sitting together by the entrance, Vlada turning toward Alex, or a quick kiss framed by the heavy stone architecture.
The building gave us structure and symmetry, but their expressions kept the photographs from ever feeling too formal.
As a photographer, I love locations like Toronto Club because they allow an engagement session to feel unmistakably urban without relying only on Toronto’s most recognizable landmarks.

From the historic architecture of Toronto Club, we moved into the Financial District, and the visual character of the gallery changed immediately.
The red brick disappeared behind us and was replaced by reflective glass, dark towers, sharp lines and open city streets.
Here the photographs became more dynamic. Vlada and Alex walked through the intersections, crossed the street hand in hand and stood beneath the enormous scale of Toronto’s office towers while buses, cars and city life continued around them.

There is something I have always loved about photographing a couple in a busy downtown environment. The city never stops for a photoshoot, which is exactly what makes these images interesting. A TTC bus passing through the background, sunlight reflecting between buildings or pedestrians disappearing out of the frame become part of the photograph rather than distractions from it.
Against all of that scale and movement, two people can suddenly feel like the only people in the city.

For a Downtown Toronto engagement photographer, the Financial District is one of those locations that can look completely different depending on the time of day, direction of light and way it is photographed. We used both the monumental architecture and smaller, more intimate corners to keep the photographs varied while preserving the elegant mood we had created at the beginning of the session.

Later in the session, we left the dense downtown streets behind and moved toward Exhibition Place, where the photographs became softer, brighter and more romantic.
This part of Toronto offers an entirely different combination of architecture and open space. Pale historic façades, mature trees, long walkways and monumental structures gave us room to slow everything down.
We photographed around the grounds associated with the Canadian National Exhibition, or CNE, including the unmistakable Princes’ Gates. The grand arch became one of the strongest architectural elements in the gallery, particularly when Vlada and Alex were photographed small within the scene.

Instead of making every photograph a close portrait, I wanted some images to show the environment around them. Years from now, those wider frames will not only show what Vlada and Alex looked like, but also where they were and what that Toronto summer evening felt like.
We continued through the tree-lined areas and around the fountain, alternating those larger environmental photographs with close portraits, movement, small details and moments between them.
By this point in the session, the light had begun to change too. It became warmer and lower, wrapping around them through the trees and giving the portraits a softer quality than the crisp downtown photographs from earlier in the day.

The final part of the engagement session brought us to the Toronto waterfront, and it felt like exactly the right place to finish.
Behind Vlada and Alex were rows of yachts and sailboats, calm water and hundreds of thin masts disappearing into the sky. After the strong architecture of Toronto Club, the Financial District and the CNE grounds, suddenly everything felt open and quiet.

The waterfront gave us some of the most relaxed photographs of the day: walking beside the marina, laughing together, holding hands, dancing for a moment, portraits of each of them individually and those little in-between expressions that can never really be planned.
The evening light reflecting from the water made the entire scene feel almost Mediterranean.
Knowing that only a few weeks later Vlada and Alex would be celebrating their destination wedding in Greece made this final part of the gallery feel particularly fitting. Toronto was still unmistakably Toronto, but for a moment, surrounded by boats, water and late-summer sunlight, it almost felt as though the next part of their story was already beginning.

Vlada and Alex, thank you for trusting me with this photoshoot and for putting so much thought into creating it together.
What I love most about this gallery is that it contains several very different versions of Toronto while still feeling completely consistent as one story. There is the elegance of Toronto Club, the scale and movement of the Financial District, the historic architecture of Exhibition Place and the Canadian National Exhibition grounds, and finally the quiet openness of the waterfront and yacht marina.
But the locations are ultimately only the background.
The real story is the two of you.

From meeting as teenagers after both beginning new lives in Canada, to growing up together, building a life together and eventually travelling to Greece to get married, there is already so much history behind these photographs.
I hope that when you look through this gallery now, you see beautiful photographs. But I also hope that years from now they bring back something more difficult to describe: what this particular summer felt like, how close your wedding suddenly seemed, and what it was like to be right on the edge of another chapter of your life together.
It was such a pleasure to photograph you both, and I wish you an incredible life together.

We are Alexandra and Vladimir Nadtochiy, a husband-and-wife photography and videography team based in Toronto. Our approach combines documentary photography with a subtle editorial and film-inspired aesthetic, allowing us to create photographs that feel beautiful and intentional while still preserving genuine emotion, movement and personality.

We photograph engagements and weddings throughout Toronto, the GTA, Ontario and beyond, and we help our couples plan sessions around the locations, light, wardrobe and overall atmosphere they want to create. An engagement session can take place entirely downtown, along the waterfront, on private property, in nature, or—as Vlada and Alex’s photographs show—combine several very different Toronto environments into one cohesive story.
